It’s summertime outside. People are sitting by the pool and having barbecues– I know, I can smell them. And I can smell the Banana Boat smeared onto freckled arms while kids suck the watermelon off a rind with the juice running down their faces. The sun through the window is so bright it hurts my eyes and yet I can take them off the beautiful blue sky outside my window.
Snap out of it. Pay attention to your work. Get it finished so you can get out of here. I tell myself a million times and alas, no such luck. My working memory isn’t being consolidated into my long term memory and the notes that are so scribbly from when I was dozing off in class are nearly impossible to understand. Would it really be so bad if I just half-assed studying and just pulled for the ‘C’ to pass the class? Yeah, probably.
My favorite– and I mean that in a biting way, guess that means I didn’t do well in my anal phase of development– subject in psychology is memory. When you study memory in psychology it reinforces the idea that “rote memorization” is not the right way to study. I’ll make sure to put that on my flash cards when I get around to making them. Rote memorization? Not an effective way to study. Hope that’s a question on the test.
Graduation, or more specifically the Santa Clara University Commencement Ceremony in which I will be walking is this Saturday. After that I have two classes for six weeks to prove to… the university?… that I am capable of being a psychology major with an English minor. Then I have an announcement to make a notion official, and yeah, I could probably just “announce” it right now. But what fun would that be? It’s so much more appropriate to announce it later and finally have an answer to my post-graduation plans.
Here’s a fun fact: Certain types of eczema can be caused by stress, including one that shows up on the sides of fingers and toes as deep blisters. You should see my pinkie finger, it looks like a mine field!
I don’t know which I’m more excited for right now: a final Wednesday night followed by one 12 hours later Thursday morning, or my parents (both sets) being around Friday and Saturday. Perhaps I’ll fast-forward Wednesday-Saturday.
Happy finals season!
